Kundiman Featured in Poets & Writers

Kundiman Poetry Prize winner (2014) Janine Joseph writes about the Kundiman–sponsored reading of her book, Driving Without a License, at the Library of Congress. Her book is an intimate look at coming of age in the United States as an undocumented immigrant. In her book, she guides readers through living in constant fear of hiding in plain sight. Janine Joseph was born and rasied in the Philippines and Southern California.

"The news was still fresh, and while I was overcome with joy and disbelief (my book would be a book!), I was also terrified of the poems that would finally be together in one space...I asked Cathy [Linh Che], who won the same prize in 2012 for her collection, Split, about how to prepare, what to expect, and what to do next. But what I really wanted to know was: How do I do it? How do I carry my story out of hiding?"
